Curriculum, Halls Of Learning, The How

First perfect Coderbyte’s score! Nothing to get all whooped up about for any beyond halfass scripter I’m sure. Still since I am barely a halfass scripter it deserves a whoop.

I’ve been through almost everything on codecademy, plus bits and bytes from other code golf or learn to code themed sites from across the web. I’ve designed and launched a website or two and felt around the insides of some, “You gotta know this!” cms and blogging platforms enough to hold my own or hook a function. Literally spent hundreds more realistically thousands of hours reading and bashing my brain against this stuff for the better part of a year now.

All this while in the back of my head I’ve had this thought. “Once I can start doing coderbytes challenges within the ten minute limit or start doing anything whatsoever on Project Euler then I will be nearing a level of competence with which I can say that I have achieved my goal.” I will have then graduated to a half ass coder + 1/2. A marvelous start.

As my father sometimes jokes, “It’s good enough for the girls we go with.” and whether or not that holds true when the time comes. It’s certainly good enough for me.

Complexity Explorer Certificate

Intro to Complexity – The Santa Fe Institute

This was a very well designed and delivered course. It begins again Sept 30th for anyone interested.

One difficulty shared by all web-based learning is the disconnect between self and the concepts being learned. The more complex the concept the more you are likely to need interaction with it’s concepts to master it. The web as a knowledge delivery platform demands an extra degree of integration between learner and material. The responsibility to bridge this gap falls entirely on the learner but that doesn’t free the institutions of the need to cross it.

This is likely the largest issue for any learner slogging through video lecture after pdf on top of video lecture between flash-based quizzes in order to grasp that concept they must for whatever reason get a handle on. Designers and educators face a monumental task. Teaching and learning have been done for thousands of years on 2 dimensional static surfaces. When it comes to any college+ level topic taught via the web. The gap between in one ear and out the other and comprehension is narrow. The power of electronic media is only more difficult to properly structure though once it gets there I believe it would have to be more effective.

Reading on a digital surface is highly agitating compared to that good ol’ pulpy stuff we grew up on. There is also something about a lecture in person that makes listening significantly more effective. Perhaps it is that you are captive away from the comfort of your living room and you probably are taking notes at the very least because you lack other distraction. Perhaps it is the magic of sound created with a vocal cord and transmitted through the air as opposed to a second hand digital reproduction.

I digress but refuse to return to wrapping up this point. It will become real to us both in the near future I suspect. As of now I am unsure of what exactly I am getting at.

Halls Of Learning

My recent undertakings

The following list was the intended points of my last post if you didn’t pick up on that it’s because I didn’t get to it. To avoid similar mishaps stacking upon one another starting nowish I’ll dive right in.

First what, then where. Unless they go hand in hand.

When I started this blog, with the exception of P2pu, I was doing essentially nothing productive. Now I have three blogs going and the slew of skill grabbing scrambling activities partially documented above. However I have become severely addicted to online coursework. .Represented above is the gist of what I have done. Barely scraping the surface of the platforms, communities and tools I have made use of to some extent in the past two months. I intend on giving some reviews, highlights and general observations in the following few posts. As well as showcase a few projects of mine.

The Reflecting Pool

Hey look!! I’ve been here before.

Downright quiescent around here lately, eh?

The high price to pay for a knowledge seeker whom has abjured a formal education. Six autogenous, qualified, adjectives took a stroll down subjective street. Allegedly keen, seemingly informed, undeniably capable. Fastidiously feckless, intrinsically inert, effectively ineffectual. Therein lies my issue.

Keeping in mind, description of oneself, from a myriad of perspectives under the light of any mood conceivable, is all to simple. One more stab. I am a tangle of conflict such that, were I in someone’s tackle box, they would get out their knife the moment I were needed. Lest they go mad attempting to decipher and work out my chaotic knotted winding. Or so it seems from in here.

To be continued. Theoretically this afternoon

Hosting & DNS

Plugin Error

Plugin Error

Godaddy is no good for wordpress.

Take a look at: this and this.

I get this plugin error constantly and there seems to be no clear cut simple fix.

I’ll be honest and say I didn’t specifically research my needs thoroughly enough before selecting godaddy for my hosting. I registered my domain with them and the package deal was very attractive.

In regard to DNS configuration it was easy as pie since I hosted where I registered.

Step One: Nothing.

Boom bam donezo just like that. Too good to be true right? Yep.

I’m currently looking into a refund on hosting. After a few hours of reading that I should of done yesterday,  I recommend anyone intending on purchasing hosting check out Bestwebhosting360.

Head in the game? Um…. sorta.

I spent time here. Scraping my pen against 5x the amount of  little yellow slices of tree necessary to produce this fine armoire….. felt absolutely moronic. I began to merge the image into my post. Immediately, I laugh. Very unsatisfactorily though. More like getting punched in the stomach. My brain catches up to its own sense of humor, quickly. Alerts itself to how this poor jokers pitiful failure is not something for laughing at. I must fight the temptation to gloss over this pitiful confusion.

Happily involved in a self driven, online course designed to get my feet wet in html and basic image manipulation; online. The assignments come out of my computer screen into my brain. It’s my job to spit it back into the computer. My sheen goes all over it. “Look everyone! Do you see? I get it!” Just beaming with good job me.

There is no reason here for such fuss. Where does it say to take this assignment and put it on my dresser? How could I fail to expect post-it notes to need doctoring? They should and could easily be covered with: lighter, cheaper, neater and just plain ol’ better, yellow squares of pixels? Primo canvases craving those thick, black and legible fonts. Right?

I would fire that guy if I couldn’t demote him; me, anyone, you.
